Standards of Care

Preamble

Pittsburgh Pet Care (“PPC”) is dedicated to creating, maintaining, and promoting standards of excellence in the pet care industry.  As such, PPC expects all of its members to effectively adhere to the standards of care for pets, outlined herein, within all aspects of their lives, including at work and home.

These standards of care are designed to provide appropriate guidelines, accountability, and enforceable standards of conduct for all PPC members.

PPC members agree to abide by the following PPC Standards of Care (“Standards of Care”):

 

Definitions

  • Bedding: material used by pets to support their bodies when resting or otherwise stationary, including, but not limited to, beds, blankets, bark, mulch, and shavings.
  • Client: The Client is the person(s) to whom pet care is being provided to.
  • Conflict of Interest: A situation in which a pet care professional has a private or personal interest sufficient enough to influence the objectivity of their official duties as a pet care professional.
  • Containment Area: any enclosed area or container in which an animal will be kept, including, but not limited to, bins, boxes. cages, kennels, tanks, crates, and fenced yards.
  • Domesticated Animal: An animal which has been conditioned by humans to live with and depend upon humankind for their survival.
  • Environment: the surroundings in which a pet occupies or visits, including shelters and containment areas.
  • Food: Any nutritious substance a pet eats in order to maintain life and growth, including primary sources such as meals and secondary sources such as treats used for training, rewards, or other reasons.
  • Large Quantity of Food: An amount of nourishment containing multiple servings, as prescribed by its packaging, of kibble, treats, and other types of cuisine.
  • Lead: A leash, line, rope, tether, or other item used to control a pet by attaching it directly to the pet or a collar, harness, or other means of connection which has already been placed on the pet.
  • Permanent Care: Pet care for a pet that is owned by an individual, pet care organization, or client who intends to keep the pet for the entirety of the pet’s life.
  • Permanent Containment Area: any containment area that is used as the primary means to contain a pet.
  • Pet: A domesticated animal that is in the permanent, provisional, or temporary care of a PPC member, pet care organization, or client.
  • Pet Care: The provision of and responsibility for the emotional, physical, environmental, and medical well-being of a pet.
  • Pet Care Organization: An organization responsible for rendering and/or ensuring the care of pets, such as, but not limited to, animal shelters, pet stores, veterinarian offices, veterinarian hospitals, and mobile veterinarian care.
  • Pet Care Professional: An individual responsible for rendering and/or ensuring the care of a pet, such as, but not limited to, an animal trainer, dog walker, pet sitter, an individual transporting a pet, animal shelter employee, pet store employee, animal groomer, and veterinarian.
  • Professional Relationship: A professional relationship exists when pet care includes an agreement (including contracts) that defines the responsibilities of each party.
  • Provisional Care: Pet care provided by an individual for a pet that is in the permanent or temporary care of another individual, client, or pet care organization.
  • Temporary Care: Pet care for a pet that is not owned by a specific individual and is being temporarily housed by an individual or pet care organization with the intention of being sold or otherwise relocated when appropriate.
  • Temporary Containment Area: any containment area that is used temporarily to contain a pet as needed.
  • Shelter: any building or structure that provides protection from weather or danger.
  • Well-Being: A state of being that includes happiness, comfort, and health.

 

Standards of Care for Pets

Section 1: The PPC Pledge & Professional Conduct at Large

As a pet care professional and member of PPC, I:

1) Agree to conduct myself in accordance with the PPC Pledge:

I pledge to help people make wise choices with their pets’ care. I will do my best to stay current with the best practices and education available.  I will do no harm while teaching others how to care for their pets.  I will treat every person and animal as the individuals they are and seek to understand their unique needs.  I will ask for help from others when situations require a skill set beyond my current skill and education level.  I will be open minded and continue to grow as a pet care professional.

2) Agree to conduct myself in accordance with these Standards of Care in all interactions with pets, as well as, my clients, colleagues, employees, mentees, supervisors, and others I interact with while executing my duties as a pet care professional, including training, mentoring, and supervisory activities.

3) Agree to never willfully, intentionally, or negligently put a pet at risk of death, serious physical injury, or emotional trauma.

4) Shall immediately remove any pet(s) in my permanent, provisional, and/or temporary care (“in my care”) from an environment or situation that would lead to their death, cause them to be seriously physically injured, or emotionally traumatized until the environment or situation has been rendered safe for them to return to it.

5) Agree to never physically or emotionally abuse a pet.

6) Agree to immediately contact the owner(s) of a pet in my care who has been injured or passed away and inform them of the circumstances, if known, leading to the pet’s passing or injury.

7) Agree to immediately contact the owner(s) of a pet in my care who has been lost to inform them of the situation at hand, as well as, the measures being undertaken to recover the lost pet.

8) Agree to be responsible for the cleaning and disposal of waste produced by the pet(s) in my care in a timely and safe manner.  I further recognize the failure to clean up and dispose of pet waste can lead to the transmission of disease and poses a health risk to human beings.

9) Shall adhere to and abide by all laws within the United States, including local, state, and federal laws, governing the care, welfare, and well-being of pets.  I further agree to abide by any local signage of said laws, such as, but not limited to, signs dictating dogs be kept on leashes.

 

Section 2: Food & Food Storage

As a pet care professional and member of PPC, I:

10) Shall feed the pet(s) in my care appropriate, palatable, and nutritious food which meets their specific dietary needs and allows for normal growth, maintenance of normal body weight, and maintenance of bodily functions, such as, but not limited to, reproduction and lactation.  Moreover, I shall recognize, and abide by, the dietary needs of the pet(s) in my care are determined by, but not limited to, the needs of their species, life stage, and veterinarian prescribed feeding guidelines.

11) Shall provide the pet(s) in my provisional care with, except in extenuating circumstances, only the food expressly provided by and approved of by their owner(s).  Moreover, in the event of extenuating circumstances, I agree to inform the pet(s) owner(s), in true, accurate, and complete detail, of the food I provided to their pet(s).

12) Shall feed the pet(s) in my care on a feeding schedule which meets their specific dietary needs and recognize that the feeding schedule of pet(s) in my provisional care may be dictated by, but not limited to, the needs of their species, life stage, veterinarian prescribed feeding guidelines, and permanent and/or temporary care providers (as applicable).  Moreover, I recognize that not all pet species require daily feedings and shall ensure I take the appropriate measures to be aware of the feeding frequency guidelines for the pet(s) in my care.

13) Shall strive, at all times, to provide pets in my permanent and/or temporary care with high quality, ethically sourced food, within the confines of my financial means and the availability of such food within my geographical area.

14) Shall strive, at all times, to be aware of any physical or behavioral signs exhibited by pet(s) in my care which may be the result of nutritional issues.  Such signs may include, but are not limited to, discoloration or dryness of skin, lethargy, shakiness, seizures, anxiety, hyperactivity, and aggression.  If I become aware of such signs, I will inform the owner(s) of the pet(s) exhibiting the signs of my observations.

15) Should I encounter any physical or behavioral signs exhibited by the pet(s) in my care which may be the result of nutritional issues, I shall consult with the appropriate pet care professional(s) to determine if the signs are the result of nutritional issues and how to appropriately proceed if the signs are deemed to be the result of nutritional issues.  Moreover, I recognize nutritional modifications may include, but are not limited to, changes to food, dietary restrictions, and feeding schedules.

16) Shall keep the areas in which I prepare and store food for pets in my care clean and disinfected from harmful contaminants.  Moreover, I shall strive, at all times, to be aware of any unclean and/or reasonably believed to be contaminated areas in which the owner(s) of pet(s) within my provisional care prepare and store food for their pet(s).  I further agree, should I encounter any of these situations, to let the owner(s) know of the unclean and/or reasonably believed to be contaminated areas.

17) Shall store any large quantities of food in clean, cool, dry, and sanitized areas and containers which are free of rodents.  I further agree that any open bags of food shall be stored in a manner which is rodent proof and protected from the possibility of contamination.  Moreover, I recognize this includes not leaving bags, containers, or other methods of storing food open to the environment surrounding it.

18) Shall store large quantities of food for a period of time no greater than the manufacturer’s recommendation to ensure the nutritional integrity and prevention of contamination of the food being stored.

19) Shall refrigerate all food for pets in my care which require refrigeration.  I further agree to abide by any additional temperature requirements for the storage of food for pets as dictated by the manufacturer of their food.

20) Shall strive, at all times, to be aware of any food stored in unclean, hot, damp, or unsensitized areas for the pet(s) in my provisional care and relocate the food to an area appropriate for its storage.  Furthermore, I shall inform the owner(s) of the food of my relocation of the food, the reason for relocating the food, and the improper storage area in question.

21) Shall provide a reasonable amount of knowledge regarding proper food and clean areas for food preparation and storage to the owner(s) of pet(s) in my provisional care so they may be properly equipped to make educated choices regarding the food, and its preparation and storage, they provide to their pet(s).  I further agree, in the event I am not informed enough to provide the aforementioned knowledge, that I will provide the owner(s) of pet(s) in my provisional care with a reference(s) and/or contact information for a pet care professional(s) who is(are) more informed than I regarding the aforementioned knowledge.

 

Section 3: Water

As a pet care professional and member of PPC, I:

22) Shall ensure the pet(s) in my care are provided with access to fresh potable water free of contaminants at all times.  I further agree water open to the environment, such as water in bowls, shall be emptied and refilled on a daily basis to ensure its quality meets the aforementioned standard.

23) Shall regularly inspect any devices, including, but not limited to automated dispensers, bottles, bowls, and tubes used to provide water to the pet(s) in my permanent and/or temporary care for proper operation, cleanliness, and contamination.  I further agree to wash the devices noted above, and all other devices not expressly noted above which are used to provide water to pets, on a regular basis to prevent mold and contamination.

24) Shall strive, at all times, to be aware of any issues concerning operation, cleanliness, and/or contamination of any devices, including, but not limited to automated dispensers, bottles, bowls, and tubes used to provide water to pets in my provisional care.  I further agree, in the event I encounter any issue(s), to inform the owner(s) of the device(s) of the issue(s) I encountered.

25) Shall provide a reasonable amount of knowledge to the owner(s) of pets in my provisional care regarding the benefits of giving their pets access to clean water and having properly functioning, contaminant free water dispensing devices.  I further agree, in the event I am not informed enough to provide the aforementioned knowledge, that I will provide the owner(s) of pet(s) in my provisional care with a reference(s) and/or contact information for a pet care professional(s) who is(are) more informed than I regarding the aforementioned knowledge.

 

Section 4: Environmental Well Being

As a pet care professional and member of PPC, I:

26) Recognize, and agree to abide by, all environments, shelters, and containment areas for pet(s) in my care, shall be clean, comfortable, safe, secure, reasonably free from stressful stimuli, and will not cause harm or induce self-inflicted harm.

27) Shall, in the event a pet(s) in my care is(are) in an environment, shelter, or containment area which would lead to death, injury, or emotional trauma, immediately remove the pet(s) from the environment, shelter, or containment area until it is safe for them to return it.

28) Shall immediately remove any object(s) or material(s) from reach and/or eyesight, as applicable, which would lead to death, injury, or emotional trauma of a pet in my care.

29) Recognize, and agree to abide by, all environments, shelters and/or containment areas for pets in my care shall be sized and setup in a manner which provides an adequate amount of space for the pet’s species and life stage, allowing for physical comfort, sufficient freedom of movement, normal species behavior, proper posture and adjustments to posture.

30) Recognize, and agree to abide by, all environments, shelters and/or containment areas for pets in my care shall provide a species appropriate rest area(s), access to food, and access to water.

31) Recognize, and agree to abide by, all indoor environments, shelters and/or containment areas for the pet(s) in my care shall be maintained at a species appropriate humidity and temperature or in a range of species appropriate humidity and temperatures.

32) Acknowledge, and agree to abide by, pets in my care which are housed outside shall be housed in a shelter and/or containment area which is sturdy, durable, provides protection from the elements, and impervious to moisture.

33) Shall ensure, at all times, pets in my care have access to species appropriate fresh, ventilated, and properly treated air.  I further agree to properly maintain any equipment within my direct control which is used to maintain the aforementioned quality and provision of air.

34) Shall ensure, at all times, pets in my care receive a species appropriate amount of daily light, natural and/or artificial.  I further agree to provide enough light to pets in my care for them to engage in their normal activities of daily living, play, and rest in safe manner.

35) Shall strive, at all times, to be aware of any environments, shelters and/or containment areas for the pets in my care which are in need of being disinfected and/or contain debris and/or hazardous material which needs to be removed.  I further agree to thoroughly disinfect the shelters and/or containment areas and remove debris and/or hazardous material in the event it is needed.

36) Shall use safe and non-toxic cleaning products while disinfecting shelters and/or containment areas for the pets in my care.

37) Shall immediately remove or repair edges and/or surfaces which are sharp, rough, or in disrepair from the shelters and/or containment areas for the pets in my care.

38) Recognize, and agree to abide by, all permanent containment areas provide for urination and defecation for the pet being housed.

39) Recognize, and agree to abide by, if a pet will be kept in a temporary containment area that does not provide for urination and defecation, I shall ensure that the pet is not kept in that temporary containment area for an extended period of time, so that they have the opportunity to urinate and/or defecate in an appropriate area as needed.

40) Shall protect all pets in my care from the elements and weather conditions of outdoor environments.  I further agree to take appropriate measures to further protect pets in my care when the elements and weather conditions threaten their health and/or well-being.

41) Shall ensure, at all times, to be aware of and provide reasonable means of prevention of access to external human-made dangers such as, but not limited to, roads, oncoming traffic, electrical boxes, and power lines in all environments that surround the pet(s) in my care.

42) Recognize, and agree to abide by, bedding for pets in my care shall not be of a make and material which is easily editable, as well as, be species and life stage appropriate, free of toxins, contaminants, and/or other hazardous materials and/or substances which can cause harm to pets.

43) Shall, in the event an environment, shelter, containment area, and/or bedding not in my direct control, such as, but not limited to, under the control of the owner(s) of a pet in my provisional care or a public space (i.e. dog park), does not meet the standards in this section, separate the pet(s) in my care from the item/area in question until the standards in this section are met.  I further agree, in the event of provisional care, to provide the owner(s) of the pet(s) with a true, accurate, and complete description of the issue(s) I encountered, the action(s) I took, and the remedy I used to meet the standards within this section.  Moreover, if I am uncomfortable with or unable to safely and effectively meet the standards of this section, I shall have the owners(s) meet the standards within this section while I or another individual provides provisional care for the pet(s) until the standards within this section are met.

44) Agree to provide a reasonable amount of knowledge to the owner(s) of pets in my provisional care regarding the benefits of having proper environments, shelters, containment areas, and bedding per the standards in this section.  In the event I am not informed enough to provide the aforementioned knowledge, I agree that I will provide the owner(s) with a reference(s) and/or contact information for a pet care professional(s) who is(are) more informed than I regarding the aforementioned knowledge.

45) Recognize, and agree to abide by, the standards in this section apply when pets in my care are under my direct supervision, the supervision of others I am responsible for, and are unsupervised.

 

Section 5: Physical & Emotional Well-Being

As a pet care professional and member of PPC, I:

46) Shall ensure the pets in my permanent and/or temporary care are able to exercise, play, and relax in a safe appropriate manner pursuant to the biological and physiological needs of their species, breed, life stage, and age on a regular basis.

47) Shall ensure the pets in my provisional care, at the request of their owner(s) and/or through a need based on reasonable observation, are able to exercise, play, and relax in a safe appropriate manner pursuant to the biological and physiological needs of their species, breed, life stage, and age during my care for them.

48) Shall ensure the pets in my permanent and/or temporary care are able to partake in species, breed, life stage, and age appropriate enrichment activities on a daily basis, as well as, are granted a reasonable amount of freedom to make their own choices under my supervision.

49) Shall ensure the pets in my provisional care, at the request of their owner(s) and/or through a need based on reasonable observation, are able to partake in species, breed, life stage, and age appropriate enrichment activities during my care for them, as well as, are granted a reasonable amount of freedom to make their own choices under my supervision.

50) Shall research the specific exercise, play, relaxation, and enrichment needs, in the event I am unaware of them, for each individual pet in my care.  Moreover, if I am unable to meet those needs myself, I agree to enlist the help of someone who can.

51) Shall only provide toys to the pets in my permanent and/or temporary care which are made from non-hazardous materials and are appropriate for the species and life stage of the pet(s) in my permanent and/or temporary care.

52) Shall strive, at all times, to remove any toy(s) made from hazardous materials, species inappropriate, and/or life stage inappropriate from the access of pets in my provisional care.  I further agree to let the owner(s) of the toy(s) know I removed access to the toy(s) and the true, accurate, and complete reason for my removal of the toy(s).  Moreover, I agree to provide a reasonable amount of knowledge to the owner(s) of the toy regarding the hazardous/inappropriate nature of the toy(s).  In the event I am not informed enough to provide the aforementioned knowledge, I agree that I will provide the owner(s) with a reference(s) and/or contact information for a pet care professional(s) who is(are) more informed than I regarding the aforementioned knowledge.

53) Shall always take into consideration the emotional well-being of the pet(s) in my care including, but not limited to, my interactions with the pet(s) and making decisions which affect them.

54) Shall always take into consideration behavioral and social concerns while the pet(s) in my care are interacting with other animals (domesticated and non-domesticated) and human-beings.

55) Recognize, and agree to abide by, pets in my care benefit from social enrichment through interactions with other pets and human beings on a daily basis, as deemed appropriate by their species and individual needs.

56) Shall ensure the pet(s) in my permanent and/or temporary care receive species and individual appropriate bathing, grooming, and maintenance of their, but not limited to, skin, nails, claws, teeth, fur and hair per their biology.  I further recognize, and agree to abide by, some pets may require regular assistance from a professional groomer in order to have their basic needs met.  Moreover, I agree that if I am unable to meet the basic grooming needs of the pet(s) in my permanent and/or temporary care, I will enlist the help of someone who can.

57) Shall strive, at all times, to be aware of any unmet bathing, grooming, and maintenance needs of the pet(s) in my provisional care.  I further agree to inform the owner(s) of a pet in my provisional care of any unmet grooming and/or maintenance need(s) of their pet.  Moreover, I agree to provide a reasonable amount of knowledge regarding proper grooming and maintenance per the standard outlined above.  In the event I am not informed enough to provide the aforementioned knowledge, I agree that I will provide the owner(s) with a reference(s) and/or contact information a for pet care professional(s) who is(are) more informed than I regarding the aforementioned knowledge.

 

Section 6: Medical Well-Being

As a pet care professional and member of PPC, I:

58) Shall ensure the pets in my permanent and/or temporary care are current on their species appropriate vaccines, except in veterinarian directed extenuating medical circumstances, and undergo regular health checks per the needs of their species.

59) Shall adhere to any and all medication directions provided by veterinarians for the pets in my care.

60) Shall always take into consideration the recommendations of veterinarians regarding medical and emergency medical procedures for the pet(s) in my care.  I further agree to always take into consideration the needs of the pet(s) in my care regarding medical and emergency medical procedures.

61) Shall, at all times, be aware of or able to find the location and contact information for medical and emergency medical facilities for the pets in my care.  I further agree this includes medical and emergency medical facilities in my residential area and areas in which the owner(s) of the pets in my provisional care reside.

62) Recognize not all medical and emergency medical facilities provide all medical services and service all species of pets.  As such, I further agree to first ensure the medical or emergency medical facility chosen to render medical care to the pet(s) in my care actually provides the service(s) needed and renders services to the species of the pet in need of medical care.

63) In the event a pet in my provisional care requires a trip to a medical facility, a medical procedure, or an emergency medical procedure during my care, I shall provide the owner(s) of the pet a true, accurate, and complete account of the event leading to the medical visit and/or procedure, the service(s) and/or procedure rendered to the pet, the results of the service(s) and/or procedure, and any, but not limited to, subsequent medication, follow-up, and veterinarian instructions resulting from the service(s) and/or procedure.

 

Section 7: Leads, Collars, Harnesses, & Other Control Devices

As a pet care professional and member of PPC, I:

64) Shall only use leads, collars, harnesses, and other controlling devices for the pet(s) in my permanent and/or temporary care which do not inflict physical or emotional harm upon them.  I further agree to adjust or purchase new leads, collars, harnesses, or other controlling devices as needed to ensure they do not inflict physical or emotional harm upon the pets in my permanent care and/or temporary care.

65) Shall only use leads, collars, harnesses, and other controlling devices for the pet(s) in permanent care and/or temporary care which provide for appropriate control over them and the ability to quickly remove them from physically and emotionally dangerous situations.  I further agree to adjust or purchase new leads, collars, harnesses, or other controlling devices as needed to ensure they provide for appropriate control over and the ability to quickly remove the pet(s) in my permanent and/or temporary care from physically and emotionally dangerous situations.

66) I shall strive, at all times, to be aware of any leads, collars, harnesses, or other controlling devices for pets in my provisional care which inflict harm and/or do not provide for appropriate control as described above.  I further agree to adjust or cease the use of, as appropriate, the lead, collar, harness, or other controlling device which does not meet the standards described above, as well as, inform the owner(s) of the pet about the adjustment or cessation of use of the lead, collar, harness, or other controlling device.

67) I agree to provide a reasonable amount of knowledge regarding the benefits of having proper leads, collars, harnesses, and other controlling devices per the standard outlined above.  In the event I am not informed enough to provide the aforementioned knowledge, I agree that I will provide the owner(s) with a reference(s) and/or contact information for a pet care professional(s) who is(are) more informed than I regarding the aforementioned knowledge.

 

Section 8: Identification & Records

As a pet care professional and member of PPC, I:

68) Recognize, and agree to abide by, pets in my care shall have physically visible identification on their collar, harness, or other device which is physically attached to their body or on their body while they are outside of their residence.  I further agree the identification shall include the pet’s name and means of contacting their legal owner.

69) Recognize, and agree to abide by, the identification for pets in my permanent and/or temporary care shall abide by all laws within the United States, including local, state, and federal laws, governing the requirements to maintain identification, as well as, the information contained on the identification.

70) Shall strive, at all times, to be aware of any identification for the pet(s) in my provisional care which has been lost, not provided to me, or does not comply with the United States laws, including local, state, and federal laws, governing the requirements to maintain identification, as well as, the information contained on the identification.  I further agree, in the event of any issue(s) with the aforementioned identification, to immediately inform the owner(s) of the identification of the issue(s) for remedy of the issue(s).  Moreover, I agree to provide a reasonable amount of knowledge regarding proper identification per the standard outlined above.  In the event I am not informed enough to provide the aforementioned knowledge, I agree that I will provide the owner(s) with a reference(s) and/or contact information for a pet care professional(s) who is(are) more informed than I regarding the aforementioned knowledge.

71) Shall maintain important records, including, but not limited to, birth, registration, genealogy, licensing, and medical records for the pet(s) in my permanent and/or temporary care during their lifetime or length of temporary care when these records are available to me and applicable to the species and breed of pet(s) in my permanent care.  I further recognize, and agree to abide by, the need to retain some or all of these records after the death of a pet in my permanent care in the event they provide information relevant to, but not limited to, offspring of the pet.  Moreover, I shall provide the aforementioned records to the individual(s) who is(are) to provide permanent care for pets who are being transferred from my temporary care to their permanent care.

 

Section 9: Travel

As a pet care professional and member of PPC, I:

72) Shall arrange for provisional care, which abides by this Standards of Care, for the pet(s) in my permanent care when I travel away from my residence for a single night or longer without the pet(s) in my permanent care.  I further agree to arrange for provisional care for the pet(s) in my permanent care during extenuating and emergency circumstances which prevent me from rendering care in a timely fashion and accordance with the specific needs of the pet(s) in my permanent care.

73) Shall provide the person(s) rendering provisional care to the pet(s) in my permanent care with any and all directions for administering medication to the pet(s) in my permanent care requiring medication during the course of my travel without them.  I further agree to provide the person(s) rendering provisional care to the pet(s) in my permanent care with any veterinarian prescribed procedures to render medication and/or take appropriate measures in the event of a medical emergency for the pet(s) in my permanent care.  Moreover, I shall provide the person(s) rendering provisional care to the pets in my permanent care with any veterinarian prescribed handling procedures for medication, waste disposal, waste cleanup, disinfection, sanitation, and the pet(s) themselves.

74) Recognize, and agree to abide by, all requirements imposed upon me by third parties such as, but not limited to airlines, while traveling with pets in my care by land, air, or sea.

75) Shall strive, at all times, to ensure a clean, comfortable, safe, secure, reasonably free from stressful stimuli, and will not cause harm or induce self-inflicted harm environment which provides access to a place to rest, food, and water for pets in my care while traveling by land, air, or sea with them through means I can control.  I further agree to ensure, to the best of my ability, to abide by this standard for pets in my care when they are required by third parties to travel separately from me outside of my direct control.

76) Shall strive, at all times, to ensure the physical safety and security of pets in my care while traveling by land, air, or sea with them through means I can control.  I further agree, to the best of my ability, to abide by this standard for pets in my care when they are required by third parties to travel separately from me outside of my direct control.

77) Shall strive, at all times, to ensure the emotional security of pets in my care while traveling by land, air, or sea with them through means I can control.  I further agree, to the best of my ability, to abide by this standard for pets in my care when they are required by third parties to travel separately from me outside of my direct control.

78) Shall bring enough food and medication for the pets in my care while traveling by land, air, or sea with them for the duration of travel to, stay at, and travel back from my destination.  I further agree, in the event I am unable to travel with enough food and medication for the entire duration of travel and stay to purchase the additional quantity needed at my destination.

79) Shall, in the event I am unable to accompany the pet(s) in my care during travel by land, air, or sea with them, provide all pertinent third party person(s) with any and all directions for administering medication to the pet(s) requiring medication during the course of my travel without them.  I further agree to provide all pertinent third-party person(s) with any veterinarian prescribed procedures to render medication and/or take appropriate measures in the event of a medical emergency for the pet(s) in my care.  Moreover, I shall provide the all pertinent third-party person(s) with any veterinarian prescribed handling procedures for medication, waste disposal, waste cleanup, disinfection, sanitation, and the pet(s) themselves.

80) Shall, at all times, be aware of or able to find the location and contact information for medical and emergency medical facilities for the pets in my care while traveling to, staying at, and traveling from my destination.

 

Section 10: Adherence to Other Standards of Care

As a pet care professional and member of PPC, I:

81) Shall adhere to all other standards of care pursuant to my certifications, licenses, education, and employment as a pet care professional.

82) Acknowledge this Standards of Care serves as a supplement to any other standards of care I am to abide by and does not supersede them in areas in which this Standards of Care is more lenient than the other standards of care.  I further acknowledge to abide by the other standards of care I am beholden to when they are more restrictive than this Standards of Care, or provide provisions this Standards of Care does not include.

83) Acknowledge I will abide by this Standards of Care when it is more restrictive than any other standards of care I am to abide by.  I further acknowledge I will abide by this Standards of Care when it provides provisions my other standards of care do not include.

 

Part Three: Acknowledgment of the PPC Standards of Care

As a PPC member, I vow to comply and abide by the PPC Standards of Care, as well as, to practice these standards with those whom I render services to, teach, mentor, supervise, and/or employ.

If I breach this acknowledgement or any part of the PPC Standards of Care, I agree that PPC in its sole discretion may hold me accountable for so doing.  I further agree that my accountability to PPC for any breach may include sanctions, such as, but not limited to, loss of my PPC Membership.
